Closing the Data Gap Between Big & Small Businesses
JS Analytics Newsletter
Hi there! Welcome back to the JS Analytics newsletter.
In this edition, I want to give you a little more insight into why I started JS Analytics.
Why should you care?
Well, if you’re:
Intimidated by data
Feeling like you’re behind
Unsure where to start or focus
This story might offer a different perspective or at least serve as reassurance that your company can reap the rewards of using data, regardless of your current state.
First, a little context:
I’ve worked for a number of large companies and well-funded startups. These companies had big budgets, access to best-in-class data and analytics software, and could afford to pay for top talent and large data teams.
Yet the biggest challenges these companies faced with data involved some aspect of operationalizing the data. Not the technical stuff (building data pipelines, dashboards, etc.), but rather translating the technical into business value on a consistent basis.
These challenges were not solved by throwing more money at them. In fact, in some cases I’ve seen quite the opposite. Companies hired more data personnel or paid for new data tools that increased waste, noise and costs while providing little additional business value.
Okay, so why am I telling you this?
Well, when you realize that cost and technical capabilities aren’t the biggest barriers to entry, it makes data and analytics a little more approachable.
You realize that small businesses that have yet to embark on their data journey are not really that far behind. In fact, there’s something to be said about being able to start with a blank slate as a small business that’s not crippled by the data and technical debt of larger organizations.
On the surface, the data gap between small and big businesses appears quite large. But much of this is actually a perceived gap and something that can be overcome in fairly short order.
This became more apparent when I started working with small businesses. I saw the vast amounts of low-hanging fruit, and the opportunity to quickly provide real value and close that data gap. There’s no reason why small businesses can’t benefit from data in the same way as big businesses.
But more than that, I truly want to help people. I know the struggles of the entrepreneurial journey and that radical visibility into your data helps. I want to close this data gap for you to help grow your business so you can help more people with your product or service.
As always, thanks for reading!
Josh
